Spain Wins World Cup, Celebration Turns Tragic with Child's Death

Madrid. During the grand celebration of Spain winning the Football World Cup for the second time, a 13-year-old boy died in the western part of the country, while another child and others were injured.

The accident occurred just after midnight on Monday in Ciudad Rodrigo, a medieval walled city with a population of about 12,000 in the province of Salamanca, near the border with Portugal, according to regional emergency services. Hundreds of residents had gathered at the Arbol Gordo Fountain in the city center when the upper part of the monument collapsed, crushing people.

Following the incident, the municipality of Ciudad Rodrigo issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims. The municipality stated in its statement, 'The entire city is saddened by this loss and stands with the friends and family of the deceased child in this hour of grief.'

Further elaborating on the incident, the statement said, 'The moment that should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team's World Cup victory has turned into a tragic event.'

Many people had climbed onto the fountain to celebrate Spain's first World Cup victory since 2010. It is estimated that the fountain collapsed due to excessive weight.

Emergency services posted on social media X, stating, 'Just a few minutes after 12:30 AM local time, rescue teams received calls reporting that many people were trapped when the fountain collapsed.' Another injured teenager suffered a broken leg and is in serious condition.

Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final match held at the New York New Jersey Stadium, co-hosted by the United States.
