Clashes Erupt in Buenos Aires After Argentina's World Cup Final Loss

Buenos Aires. Clashes erupted between angry supporters and police in the capital Buenos Aires on Sunday night after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final.

Thousands of supporters gathered around the Obelisco monument in support of the national team immediately after the game ended. Although the situation was initially normal, the situation became tense around 11:45 PM (local time) when some individuals crossed the barricade erected for the security of the monument.

Subsequently, supporters threw stones and glass bottles at the police. In response, riot control police used rubber bullets, tear gas, and water cannons. At least 15 people have been arrested and dozens injured in the clashes.

Publicly released images show a riot control police officer kicking a supporter on the head. According to local news site Infobae, seven police officers were also injured. The Telegraph also reported the same details. A scene was also seen where a group of people carried an unconscious person from the scene to a safe place.

Videos of the angry clashes also attacking the police have been broadcast by international media including the BBC. India Today has also published news about this and released video footage of the incident.

Police had closed many main roads in the capital to control the situation.

There was also some tension on the field immediately after the final match ended. After the 1-0 defeat, some Argentine players attempted to push, grab, and punch and kick Spanish players. Meanwhile, despite the defeat, Argentine President Javier Milei has announced a national public holiday. He said the decision on which day to give the holiday would be left to the players themselves.

Earlier, Argentina had announced a public holiday after winning the World Cup by defeating France in 2022. At that time, a victory parade was organized among millions of supporters in Buenos Aires after the team returned home.

Spain has not yet announced a public holiday. However, a victory parade is scheduled to honor the victorious team in Madrid on Monday.
