Truck Federation to Hold Convention by End of Mangsir
The Nepal Truck Transportation Business Federation has decided to hold its convention and general assembly by the end of the Nepali month of Mangsir (mid-December). This decision was made formally during a meeting of the federation's central working committee on Saturday.
Meeting Highlights Overloading as a Major Problem
The meeting concluded that both domestic and foreign trucks are illegally carrying excessive loads. This practice is damaging road and bridge structures and also increasing the risk of accidents. The federation's General Secretary, Rajendravikram Baniya, stated that even though regular checks are done at weighing stations, a trend has developed where trucks are deliberately overloaded repeatedly. Drivers simply pay a maximum fine of 1500 rupees and continue the practice.
Federation Demands Strict Enforcement of Rules
The General Secretary emphasized that vehicles found carrying loads beyond the legal limit must be immediately unloaded. He stressed that the rule from directive 2074 should be strictly enforced, and the offending truck should be impounded at the local transport office. To achieve this, the federation has written letters to the Home Ministry, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, the Department of Transport Management, and Nepal Police. The letters urge these bodies to take immediate and effective action.
Proposed Solution to Control Overloading
The federation has proposed a solution it believes will control these irregularities. They suggest that a system must be implemented where goods are mandatorily unloaded from an overloaded truck, and the truck itself is then impounded for further legal action. The federation is confident that this strict measure will help bring the problem of overloading under control.
