Red Cross Society active in rescue and relief operation in flood-hit districts

Kathmandu - Nepal Red Cross Society has said that its response volunteers and first-aid providers have been actively involved in the rescue and relief distribution operation during the natural calamity following the incessant rainfall. 

Society President Sanjeev Thapa said that some 5,000 Red Cross volunteers are deployed at flood and landslide affected districts including Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Siraha, Sarlahi, Bara, Saptari, Banke, Dhanusha, Bardiya, Sindhuli, Rasuwa, Chitwan, Makawanpur and Lalitpur. 

According to the Society, a total of 66 people have lost their lives so far, 50 have gone missing, 44 sustained injuries, more than 2,000 families have been displaced and over 19,000 families have been affected from flood and landslide in these districts. 

He also urged to save own life, make arrangements for evacuation to safer places, to take care about health and to pay special attention in protection and care of children and elderly people during such disaster. 

Thirty districts have been affected by floods and landslides so far. Of them, 17 districts are mostly affected. Deputy General-Secretary of the Society, Hari Neupane said that the Society has been distributing relief materials including instant foods, tarpaulin, and water purifying medicine in these districts. 

The Society has activated its central emergency operation centre and directed its district-based branches to be involved in search and rescue of the landslide and flood victims as well as distributing relief to them, he said. 

Calling the local communities to be alert in disaster preparedness, the Society has made its emergency teams more active by coordinating with the District-based Natural Disaster Management Committee.
