Police Warn Against Online Betting Scams Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

Kathmandu. The FIFA World Cup 2026 is starting from June 11. America, Mexico, and Canada are hosting the grand festival of world football. 

There are millions of football fans worldwide. There are also lakhs of football lovers in Nepal. Incidents of fraud by luring people into online betting and gambling along with the World Cup football have been exposed before. Police have warned that such incidents may happen in this year's World Cup as well. 

The police have warned everyone not to operate or play betting through a video message released on their Facebook page. According to the police, the gang lures people by posting attractive schemes and advertisements on social media such as 'Let's invest a little money, earn a lot of money, and earn money while staying at home'. 

Police have urged not to believe such advertisements appearing on mobile screens and not to become a 'victim' of fraud. Two police inspectors said in the video message, 'If you fall for the lure of betting to earn money easily, it is certain that you will easily become a victim of fraud.' 

According to them, those who try to earn money while staying at home are first shown as if they have won some money, and then they are tempted to deposit more money and are cheated. 

According to the Muluki Criminal Code 2074, betting should not be done. Police have urged to report if they come to know of such activities in the neighborhood, stating that operating and playing online betting is a punishable offense.
