Singer Shiva Pariyar Shares Views on AI's Impact on Nepali Music

Kathmandu. Singer Shiva Pariyar has expressed his views on the discussion that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will destroy songs and music, displace artists, and lead to the closure of recording studios. 

Posting on social media Facebook under the title 'My Views on AI and Nepali Music', he stated that while these concerns are not entirely baseless, AI should not be seen only as a threat.

He mentioned that it is natural for some types of work and workflows to change as AI can write songs, compose tunes, sing, play, and perform technical tasks quickly. However, he noted that AI is a powerful technology created by humans, not a substitute for human consciousness. 

'It can do many things, but it does not live, does not feel pain, does not experience love, separation, struggle, or joy,' Pariyar added, 'Therefore, it cannot present the emotions born from immersing in the essence of words, from one's own experiences and the depths of the soul, as a human can.'

Pariyar argues that the way forward is not to compete with AI but to deepen one's own practice. He emphasized that artists, creators, musicians, lyricists, and technicians should continuously study, contemplate, practice, and introspect in their respective fields. He expressed confidence that no technology can diminish the value of creations born from practice.

Giving an example of the market, he wrote, 'No matter how many types of fast food come, the importance of Kodo ko Dhindo and Phapar ko Dhindo has not diminished. Because people ultimately seek taste along with quality, originality, and authenticity.'

He concluded that while AI can change the way work is done, increase the speed of creation, and be a collaborator for artists, no technology can replace music born from human emotion, practice, experience, and soul. He stated that it is time to understand AI, use it where necessary, and strengthen one's originality, rather than fearing it. 'AI can provide the speed of creation, but only the artist themselves can provide the soul of creation,' he said.
