Policeman killed in Anantnag terrorist attack

Anantnag. A policeman died when terrorists opened fire in Anantnag city in Jammu-Kashmir, India on Wednesday. 

The attack took place at Lal Chowk in Anantnag around 12:30 PM.

This is the first terrorist attack in Jammu-Kashmir since 26 civilians were killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025. According to officials, terrorists attacked Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi of the IR Third Battalion, who was on duty for the security of the Amarnath Yatra. 

Qureshi, a resident of Beerwah in Budgam district, was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag immediately after the attack, but doctors declared him dead. Legal and medical action is now being carried out as per procedure.

Immediately after the incident, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a large-scale operation to search for the attackers. The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu-Kashmir spoke with DGP Nalin Prabhat to review the security situation following the terrorist attack in Anantnag. 

'I express my heartfelt condolences to the family of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, who sacrificed his life in the line of duty,' the Lieutenant Governor said, 'The entire country stands shoulder to shoulder with the martyr's family. I strongly condemn this cowardly attack.' He clarified that this heinous crime will not go unpunished and that the Jammu-Kashmir Police and security forces deployed in the field will bring the culprits to justice.
