Purna Bahadur Khadka: Party Unity Key Lies with Leadership

Kathmandu. Nepali Congress former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka has said that the key to maintaining internal unity within the party lies in the hands of the leadership. Speaking at a program organized at Pragya Pratishthan on the occasion of BP's 44th memorial day, Khadka, pointing to the leadership that emerged from the special general convention, expressed the view that the party cannot unite unless President Gagan Thapa wishes it to.

However, he clarified that they would continue to work towards uniting the party until the last moment. Leader Khadka, citing historical examples, mentioned that the responsibility of making decisions that determine the future of the party rests with the leadership. 'Earlier, Girija Prasad Koirala made the historic decision to unite the divided Congress,' he said, 'Today, the decision to unite or divide the party is in your hands, Gaganji. The party cannot unite unless you wish it to, so I urge you to make a decision for unity.'

Khadka proposed connecting the structures of the regular (14th) general convention and the special general convention for party unity. He argued that giving recognition only to the special general convention committee by sidelining the committee formed from the 14th general convention has broken legal precedents.

'Connect the central committees of the regular and special general conventions, guarantee that the 15th general convention will be impartial and independent, and the Congress will unite immediately,' he said. He stated that although President Gagan Thapa and Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma had pledged to unite during their meeting, different things were being said outside.

Clarifying that they were not bargaining for positions, leader Khadka expressed commitment to stand as a shield for the youth. 'We have already received all positions before, we do not need any more positions now,' he added, 'We will strive for consensus until the last moment. However, we cannot surrender by sacrificing our self-respect; rather, we are ready to die for it.'

Khadka pointed out the national need for the Congress to unite at a time when Nepal's nationality and democracy are in crisis. He believes that the current crisis can only be overcome by implementing in practice the principles of dialogue, consensus, and unity propounded by BP Koirala. He stated that only if the Congress unites can it play a leading role in uniting all the parties involved in constitution-making.
