US Imposes 50% Tariff on Canadian Imports Amid Trade Tensions

Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump has announced a 50 percent tariff on various goods imported from Canada. The US has made this decision, accusing Canada of unfair treatment towards American vehicles, dairy products, and alcohol.

The new tariff will come into effect after 30 days. This has further escalated trade tensions between the two North American neighboring countries.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, however, has stated that trade talks with the US will be intensified in the coming weeks. Through social media X, he accused the US of taking unilateral trade steps one after another, contrary to the spirit of the Canada-US-Mexico Free Trade Agreement.

The new tariff will apply to daily consumer goods such as wine and hockey sticks, as well as industrial materials like commercial cement. However, major export items such as energy, potash, important minerals, and fish have been exempted.

The US has already imposed tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent on Canadian steel, aluminum, and copper. Additionally, there is a 35 percent tariff on softwood lumber and a 25 percent tariff on non-US parts used in vehicles.

In response, Canada has also imposed a 25 percent retaliatory tariff on American steel, aluminum, and some vehicles.

The new decision comes after President Trump warned of imposing further tariffs a few days ago, citing that smoke from wildfires originating in Canada had reached American cities.
