Kathmandu Valley Drainage and Flooding Issues Discussed

Kathmandu. A discussion was held among stakeholders to solve the problem of drainage and waterlogging seen in the Kathmandu Valley during the rainy season. In the discussion held today at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority among stakeholders, emphasis was placed on making a long-term plan to solve the problem of inundation every year due to the problem of drainage in the valley.

In the discussion, a detailed review was done on long-term solutions to solve the problem of inundation and water drainage during the rainy season. Participants emphasized the need to prepare immediate, short-term, and long-term action plans and implement them in a coordinated manner.

At the meeting, discussions were held on improving the drainage system, prioritizing water drainage during road construction and maintenance, increasing preparedness in risk-prone areas, and maintaining regular coordination among the concerned bodies, informed the spokesperson of the authority, Shanti Mahat.

Representatives from the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Department of Roads, Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, and other stakeholders participated in the discussion.

According to Mahat, participants emphasized the need to strengthen coordination among the concerned bodies and move forward with planned infrastructure improvement works for a sustainable solution to the recurring inundation and drainage problems in the valley every year.
