UML Deputy Leader Padam Aryal Objects to Hasty Parliamentary Hearing Process

Kathmandu. CPN-UML Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Padam Aryal has objected to the hasty parliamentary hearing process. Speaking at a meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee today, she expressed the view that it is inappropriate to proceed to the decision-making process without adequate study and discussion with the complainants.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Leader Aryal said that it is mysterious to try to conclude everything today without giving any time for study when the work plan and complaints have just been received. Aryal demanded that the committee should also receive details of other candidates discussed in the council to examine the qualifications and expertise of the names recommended by the Constitutional Council.

She said, 'The dignity of the committee diminishes when decisions are made in haste without giving time to study the complaints and listen to the grievances of the complainants. Such sensitive matters require serious discussion and a transparent process. There was talk of six names going to the Constitutional Council. The committee has the right to know on what basis three people or the proposed individuals were selected. The Prime Minister has spoken about qualifications and expertise; we can only become clear after comparing the documents of other candidates and the proposed individuals. If we do not exercise our rights, this committee appears to be merely a shadow of the executive. Therefore, it would be better to reach a mature decision tomorrow or the day after, even if it means studying overnight.'

She also asserted that the committee should be informed about the dissenting opinions or 'notes of dissent' raised by the leader of the opposition and the chairman of the National Assembly in the meeting of the Constitutional Council. She stated that the committee's decision should not merely be a formal means of obeying the executive's orders. Deputy Leader Aryal has drawn the attention of the chairperson to proceed seriously without procedural errors and haste.
