Prime Minister Extends Greetings on National Finger Millet Day
Kathmandu – Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has extended his best wishes on the occasion of National Finger Millet Day, calling for increased production and consumption of finger millet (kodo). In a message shared on social media platform Facebook on Friday, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of finger millet as not just a traditional crop but also a highly nutritious food.
Nutritional Benefits of Finger Millet
PM Oli emphasized that finger millet has a low glycemic index, which helps control blood sugar levels. He also noted that its high fiber content supports heart health. The Prime Minister stated that the government has decided to celebrate Ashadh 16 (July 1) as National Finger Millet Day every year to promote this beneficial crop, which can be grown even without irrigation.
Encouraging Production and Consumption
The Prime Minister urged farmers to increase finger millet cultivation and encouraged the public to include finger millet-based dishes in their diets. "Let’s boost finger millet production and consume finger millet dishes! Happy Finger Millet Day!" he said in his message. The government's initiative aims to revive the importance of this traditional grain for better health and agricultural sustainability.
