Meghraj Pokharel elected president of Supreme Court Bar

Kathmandu, January 4 — In the election of the Supreme Court Bar Association, a coalition close to the Nepali Congress and Unified Socialist Party has emerged victorious. Senior lawyer Meghraj Pokharel, a candidate from the Congress-affiliated Democratic Lawyers' Association (DLA). DLA, won with 368 votes.

Pokharel defeated Mahesh Thapa, a senior lawyer and candidate from the coalition close to the CPN-UML, Progressive Legal Association,(PLA).

There are 626 voters in the Supreme Court Bar, and every time, there is competition between the Democratic and Communist supporters.

The current Chief Justice was once the president of the Supreme Court Bar, which is considered one of the most important bars in the country. In the previous term, senior lawyer Purnaman Shakya served as president, followed by senior lawyer Harishankar Niroula.

The DLA formed an alliance with the lawyers close to the Unified Socialist, providing them with the position of vice president and other posts. Similarly, the Progressive Legal Association also entered the election with a strategy of offering non-chair positions to smaller parties.

In the election results, Ambar Bahadur Raut from the DLA coalition was elected vice president, Raman Kumar Shrestha as secretary, and Punadevi Maherjan as joint secretary.

Ramchandra Poudel was elected treasurer, and Shashi Basnet was elected as a female member.

From the UML-affiliated coalition, only one member emerged victorious. Among the nine open members, eight were from the DLA-led panel, with Satishraj Mainali being the only one elected from the opposition alliance.
