Heavy Rains Cause Landslides, Block Major Highways Across Nepal

Kathmandu. Due to continuous rain for the past few days, floods and landslides have blocked major highways in various parts of the country. According to the latest data from Nepal Police and the Department of Roads, traffic has been affected on dozens of road sections in five provinces.

In Koshi Province, the Mid-Hill Highway in Bhojpur is affected by floods, with traffic currently operating only on one side. Similarly, the Mechi Highway in Ilam and the Mid-Hill Highway in Khotang (Diktel Rupakot section) are completely blocked due to landslides. An alternative route has been arranged in Ilam.

The risk of floods and landslides has increased on the main highways of Bagmati Province. For disaster management, vehicle operation on the BP Highway (Kavre section) has been restricted from 6:00 PM to 4:00 AM. Likewise, vehicles are prohibited from operating on the Kanti Lokpath from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM. The Arniko Highway in Sindhupalchok is completely closed due to landslides at two locations (Zero Kilo and Kodari). The Lamasangu-Ramechhap Highway in Dolakha is also blocked due to floods.

Landslides have caused significant damage in the hilly districts of Gandaki Province. The Kaligandaki Corridor in Baglung, the Besisahar-Manang road section in Lamjung, and the Beni-Jomsom road section in Myagdi are completely blocked due to landslides. The complete halt of traffic in these areas has caused hardship to passengers.

In Karnali Province, the Bheri Corridor (Jajarkot-Dolpa section) in Rukum West is completely blocked due to floods. In Sudurpashchim Province, although a landslide occurred on the K.I. Singh Highway in Dadeldhura, traffic is currently operating on one side.

As the rain continues, considering the risk of further landslides, it has been requested not to travel except for essential work and to contact the nearest police station or the Department of Roads for information about the road conditions before traveling.
