KATHMANDU, May 14: As Nepal is reeling under the severe crisis created by the second wave of coronavirus, as many as  1,603 people died due to the deadlier strain in the past one month. The number of total deaths on April  15 was 3,066 including five daily death-count. However, the number of daily coronaviruses sprang by 40 times in a month.A month ago, on April 15, when Nepal celebrated the New Year, five new deaths were reported, which has now soared to more than 200 a day. At least 203 people succumbed to the viral infection on May 14 alone. 

While Nepal’s positivity rate for COVID-19  on April 15 was just 12.86 percent, it rose to 40 percent on May 14. A few days ago, the positivity rate hit the 50 percent-mark, meaning one of the two people undergoing tests were diagnosed with the disease. Daily case-count a month ago 534 out of 4,152 tests which towered up to 8,520 on Friday (May 14) which were detected through the 21,478 tests. Nepal on May 11 confirmed 9,483 new cases and 225 other deaths, highest single day numbers. 

According to the data released by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), total case count on April 15 stood at 282,054. The number, however, sprang to 439,658 by May 14, adding 157,604 new cases in just 30 days. 

As positivity rate spiked at its worst, the number of active cases, too, skyrocketed. Health ministry said that there are at least 107,336 people who are yet to recover from the disease as of Friday (May 14). The number of people undergoing treatment on April 15 was only 4,384.
