146 killed in one year in road accidents

Chitwan–A total of 146 people died in various road accidents that took place in the district last fiscal year. They died in the 295 traffic accidents that were recorded in the year in the district.

This is an increase compared to the previous fiscal year when 271 road accidents had taken place, taking the life of 132 persons, according to Chitwan district traffic police office.

Various efforts at minimizing road accidents have failed to bear any fruit. During the last fiscal, 558 people were injured in road accidents, said police inspector Chandra Kumar Giri.

The highest number of accidents involved motorcycle, with 205 of them alone related to motorcycles. Likewise, during the same period, 40,029 drivers were punished for violating traffic rules. It led to revenue collection worth Rs. 30.76 million.

The number of traffic violators have decreased in compared to the previous year but casualties have increased, said Giri. High speed, increasing pressure of vehicles as well as narrow roads are said to be the main reason behind the road accidents in the district.
