Internet Governance Forum-Nepal 2017 concludes

Kathmandu - The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Nepal-2017 concluded today in the capital with collective commitment for collaboration among multi-stakeholders for the advancement of internet, expansion of internet accessibility and reaping multiple benefits.

The IGF saw presentations followed by group discussions on wider ranges of internet policy, law, utility, future course and e-governance amidst the presence of diverse stakeholders.

During the forum hosted by the Internet Society Nepal Chapter, the findings of group discussions and major takeaways were presented on the thematic issues concerning the expansion of internet service quality, freedom of expression and information on internet, inclusiveness and promotion of smart city and feasibility in the context of Nepal.

The first of its kind event brought together around 50 different organizations and institutions including Department ot Information Technology, Nepal Telecom Authority, municipalities as local governments, Internet Service Providers, Civil Society Organizations working on internet freedom, access, IT professionals and entrepreneurs, academia and media.

As many as 200 participants took part in the two-day event.

Sensitizing the multiple stakeholders on internet ecosystem, the forum imparted a message of developing ICT infrastructure and expanding access of all to safe internet services, shared the Multi-stakeholders Coordination Committee.

The forum also touched on the relevance and feasibility of the smart city floated by different political parties in the run-up to the recently-held local elections. The experts attending the event suggested adoption of smart approaches in infrastructure development and good governance by taking into accounts the locally-brewed cultural features.

Furthermore, the forum has also stressed the urgency of exercising freedom of expression on internet.

Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Asha Koirala had inaugurated the IGF-Nepal 2017 on Friday.
