Parliamentary Committee Receives Attention Letter on Private Medical College Transformation

​Kathmandu. A letter of attention has been registered in the Education, Health and Information Technology Committee of the House of Representatives demanding the immediate implementation of the legal provision to make private medical colleges non-profit and service-oriented as per Section 47 of the National Medical Education Act, 2075 BS.

MP Dr. Toshima Karki submitted a formal letter to the committee chairperson on August 8, 2083 BS, expressing concern that despite the act coming into force 7 years ago, a clear roadmap or procedure for transformation has not been developed.

She requested an emergency meeting with the Minister of Education and the Minister of Health, calling them to be present, to complete the work within the remaining 2 years and 7 months, as educational institutions are mandated to become non-profit by February 10, 2085 BS, according to the act.

Connecting this to the context of Prof. Dr. Govinda KC starting his hunger strike again from July 7, demanding the full implementation of the said legal provision and other just demands, the letter of attention states that it is unfortunate that there is a need to risk one's life repeatedly to implement an act passed by the parliament.

Dr. Karki has put forward three demands to the committee: to urge the government to protect Dr. KC's life, to immediately prepare the transformation framework for private medical colleges, and to summon the two ministers to the committee to demand an explanation on the progress and plan of implementation so far.
