Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns

Dhaka. Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned. President Shahabuddin resigned on Friday.

International news agency Reuters has published the news, citing local media confirming his resignation. Shahabuddin had been serving as the President of Bangladesh since April 2023. He took over the responsibility of the President at a very sensitive time for the country.

In August 2024, after student protests against reservation in government jobs became uncontrollable, then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country to India. Amidst the geopolitical instability that arose in the country thereafter, Shahabuddin played the role of President until the interim government was formed during the transitional period.

According to the constitution of Bangladesh, although the President is the head of state, this post is considered mainly ceremonial. Executive power, however, rests with the Prime Minister and the cabinet. Shahabuddin is considered an old associate of Sheikh Hasina. 

According to sources, after Hasina announced her return to the country, public pressure mounted on the government to remove her last high-ranking associates as well. For this reason, it is said that Shahabuddin agreed to leave the post at the request of the government itself.
