US Soldier Dies in Iranian Attack in Iraq

A US military member died in an Iranian attack in northern Iraq on Saturday, the US military said.

Baghdad. A US military member died in an Iranian attack in northern Iraq on Saturday, the US military said.

This incident occurred in Iraq the day after two American soldiers were killed and another went missing in an attack on a military base in Jordan.

The US Central Command (Centcom) said the soldier died and another was injured while conducting a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone.

Centcom said in its latest update that "unknown debris" was found during the search of the attack site in Jordan on Friday. Centcom added that the process of identifying and confirming the debris is ongoing.

On the eighth day of increased double attacks and tensions, the US and Iran continue to attack each other. In recent days, both sides have accused each other of damaging important infrastructure. Meanwhile, less than a month after the initial ceasefire was broken, Washington has reimposed sanctions on Iranian ports, while Tehran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed and targeted US allies in the region.

The US military said its latest attacks were aimed at weakening Iran's ability to threaten commercial ships in the Strait and to immediately take action against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responsible for the Jordan attack.

Verified video from inside the US military base in Jordan shows at least two strikes and a large explosion. The total number of US soldiers killed in the ongoing conflict has reached 17, after a US Navy pilot who went missing earlier this month was declared dead.
