MP Ganesh Karki Expresses Dissatisfaction with Media and Parliamentary Presentation of Suicide Incidents

Kathmandu. Rastriya Swatantra Party MP Ganesh Karki has expressed dissatisfaction with the style of presentation of suicide and attempted suicide incidents in the media and parliament. He stated on Facebook that while there is a separate way to write, say, and show news of suicide, such caution is not being adopted at present. MP Karki mentioned that yesterday in parliament, one MP called an attempted suicide an act of bravery, and another called it a rebellion. Similarly, another MP was spreading misinformation and making things emotional by presenting stories from individuals' lives. Karki said that in a country where an average of 18 people commit suicide daily, there is a tendency to selectively politicize or highlight certain suicides. He pointed out that the media, in order to gain views on news, is working against journalistic principles and bringing the stories of individuals' life experiences to the center as soon as a suicide occurs. He warned that such irresponsible presentation will further increase the rate of similar suicides in society. Urging everyone to pay attention to these sensitive issues, MP Karki emphasized the need to create an environment where mental health issues can be openly discussed in society. He stated that everyone must be responsible for preventing suicide and saving lives.
