Special Court Hears Bail Hearing for Former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara in Corruption Case

Kathmandu. Bail hearing is underway at the Special Court in the corruption case against former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara. The Special Court has scheduled Mahara's request to appear for hearing today. The corruption case against Mahara is being heard by a bench comprising Special Court Chairman Sudarshan Dev Bhatta and member Bidur Koirala.

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a corruption case involving more than seven crore seventy-eight lakh rupees against former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara and high-ranking customs officials, among others, in the gold smuggling case where gold was brought hidden inside electronic cigarettes (vapes).

This fact came to light during an investigation based on a complaint that officials and employees of Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office had caused billions in revenue leakage by taking crores in benefits from gold smugglers.

According to the CIAA's investigation, Chinese citizen Li Hang Song, who arrived in Nepal on a 'Flydubai' flight (FZ 0587) from Dubai on Poush 10, 2079, had brought 730 vapes in 73 boxes inside two suitcases.

Precious gold was hidden inside those vapes.
