Transport Association Chief Stresses Technology and Discipline for Sector Improvement

Kathmandu. Saroj Sitaula, Chairman of the Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs National Federation, has stated that the use of technology and professional discipline are now essential requirements for the improvement of the public transport sector.

Speaking at the monsoon-related disaster mitigation campaign targeting roads and vehicles, Chairman Sitaula clarified that there is no turning back for entrepreneurs in making the transport sector modern and disciplined.

Chairman Sitaula emphasized the immediate implementation of GPS systems, online ticketing, and cashless payment systems in vehicles. He argued that technology is also necessary to ascertain the factual details during accidents and to end disputes on the road. He also urged the government and traffic police to make the GPS system mandatory when renewing vehicle inspection and route permits.

Stating that the tendency to park vehicles haphazardly on the road and pick up passengers has added challenges to road management, he said that vehicles across the country must operate from designated bus parks. He stated that the bus parks built in cities like Pokhara, Itahari, Butwal, and Dhangadhi, along with the New Buspark in Gongabu, Kathmandu, must be fully utilized.

Chairman Sitaula objected to hotels operating on highways serving unhygienic food to passengers and charging exorbitant fees. He drew the government's attention to regularly monitor hotels and ensure quality and hygienic food. He instructed drivers and co-drivers to prioritize passengers' health and convenience without being tempted by hotel commissions.

Sitaula clarified that the federation will not protect drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol (Mapse) and drugs (Lapse) under any circumstances. Furthermore, he demanded that the government set proper standards for workshops and check the quality of materials entering through border crossings, citing that accidents have increased due to fake spare parts entering the market.

Informing that the federation is in dialogue with the government in collaboration with various labor organizations for the social security and welfare of transport workers, Sitaula stated that they are committed to improving the living standards of the workers. He also urged all transport workers to drive prioritizing the information from meteorologists and to remain alert during times of disaster.
