UN Peacekeeper Killed, Another Seriously Injured in Southern Lebanon Explosion

Beirut. The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon confirmed on Monday the death of one peacekeeper and serious injury to another. The incident occurred when an explosive device struck a peacekeeping post near Aytaroun in southern Lebanon.

The ongoing conflict between the Israeli military and the Iran-backed Hezbollah in this region has put the security of local peacekeepers at risk. Indonesia confirmed that the deceased peacekeeper was a member of the battalion from Indonesia.

The death and injuries to three others occurred due to an indirect artillery attack in the area. The United Nations stated that the exact source of the explosive is yet to be identified and an investigation into the incident has been launched.

A UN statement read, "No one serving for peace should lose their life." Meanwhile, the Secretary-General strongly condemned the incident and emphasized the urgent need for measures to ensure the safety of peacekeepers.

Intense fighting between the Israeli army and Hezbollah fighters has been ongoing in the Aytaroun area along Lebanon's southern border since last month. This conflict has endangered civilian life in various Lebanese cities.

Israeli officials plan to establish a security zone 30 kilometers inside the border to provide security for civilians residing in northern Israel.

This tension in the Middle East escalated since early March when Iran-backed Hezbollah launched rocket attacks on Israel. This followed the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day of US and Israeli attacks. In this context, Israeli airstrikes have caused damage in many areas of Lebanon.

The United Nations has previously reported attacks on its posts. On March 7, three Ghanaian peacekeepers were injured by gunfire. These incidents clearly show that the security of peacekeepers has become more perilous and immediate action is required.
