Melamchi water will reach KTM by mid-January: Minister Yadav

Kathmandu - Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Mahendra Yadav has assured that the water from the Melamchi Water Supply Project will reach Kathmandu Valley by mid-January next year. 

At a programme organized at the Reporters' Club here on Wednesday, Minister Yadav clarified that although the water was likely to reach the Valley by mid-July, the deadline has been further pushed to mid-January owing to technical issues. Yadav reasoned that the works relating to tunnel were incomplete at four locations, leading to the delay. 

Requesting patience he urged, "Please be assured of receiving Melamchi water by mid-January which was envisaged by late leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai." The Minister also pledged to ensure smooth supply of clean drinking water in the meantime as he shared that instruction was issued to the concerned Divisions for the same. 

As for filling the potholes on the roads in the Valley within a fortnight as instructed by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Minister Yadav was of the confidence that work will be completed within some days. 

On a different note, he expressed his confidence that the third phase of local level election in province no 2 scheduled on September 18 would be held come what may. 

While Yadav was saying so, he was hinting at the Rastriya Janata Party's stance to contest the election on a condition of passing the constitution amendment proposal.
