Nepal Achieves Rs 17 Billion Electricity Export in FY 2081/82

Kathmandu - The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has reported significant progress in Nepal's electricity sector, with Rs 17 billion worth of power exports to India and Bangladesh during the fiscal year 2081/82.

Export Performance Outshines Imports
Nepal exported 2,332 GWh of electricity while importing 1,712 GWh, resulting in a positive trade balance. Energy Minister Deepak Khadka revealed that Nepal has secured agreements to export 941 MW to India while maintaining a 1,000 MW import arrangement. The country also began exporting 40 MW to Bangladesh under a tripartite dollar-denominated agreement.

Seasonal Power Exchange Dynamics
The electricity trade follows seasonal patterns - Nepal exports up to 850 MW during the monsoon when hydropower generation peaks, while importing 670 MW during the dry season. Minister Khadka emphasized that this strategic exchange helps optimize Nepal's energy resources throughout the year.

Domestic Consumption Shows Healthy Growth
Electricity consumption within Nepal grew by 11% to reach 14,115 GWh, with per capita consumption increasing from 400 to 470 units. This growth reflects both expanding access to electricity and rising economic activity across the country.

Future Plans for Energy Trade
The government has set an ambitious target to earn Rs 1.25 billion annually from electricity exports to Bangladesh during the June-November period. Officials are working to further increase domestic generation capacity to reduce reliance on imports while expanding export opportunities in the regional market.

Conclusion
Nepal's emerging status as a net electricity exporter marks a significant milestone in its energy sector development. The government remains committed to strengthening both domestic supply and regional energy cooperation to maximize the benefits from the country's hydropower potential.
