Dhangadhi Man Dies After Self-Immolation Attempt Amidst Domestic Dispute

Dhangadhi. Police have started a detailed investigation into the self-immolation case of 30-year-old Jyoti Chaudhary of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City-7, Kailali, considering 'domestic dispute' as the main reason.

After the self-immolation, Chaudhary, who was critically injured and being taken for treatment, died on the way. His body was handed over to relatives after a post-mortem at Seti Provincial Hospital.

Chaudhary, who set himself on fire at his home on the evening of July 25 (Shrawan 9), died on July 26 (Shrawan 10) evening while being taken to Kathmandu for treatment. The reason why the youth, who earned a living by working as a laborer, took such a drastic step has now become a topic of discussion and concern in Dhangadhi.

According to Kailali District Police Office Inspector Kailash Bisht, preliminary investigation suggests that the main cause of the incident was family conflict. 'Based on initial understanding from neighbors and relatives, it is understood that domestic disputes and, to some extent, mental stress caused by alcohol consumption led him to this situation. However, further statements are being taken from family members regarding the exact nature of the dispute,' he said.

Upon seeing Chaudhary set himself on fire, relatives immediately rescued him and took him to Seti Provincial Hospital. As treatment was not possible there, he was referred to Nepalgunj the same night. His condition did not improve in Nepalgunj either, and he passed away near Dhading while being taken to Kathmandu.

Police stated that this type of self-immolation incident is unusual in Dhangadhi. The death of Chaudhary, who supported his family with general labor, highlights the economic and mental stress and domestic conflicts present among the working class.

Police are currently continuing to take statements from Chaudhary's family and neighbors. The District Police Office, Kailali, stated that it will be revealed whether there was any instigation from others behind the incident only after the post-mortem report and detailed investigation.
