One Dead, 16 Injured in Sunsari Clash; Indefinite Curfew Imposed in Five Areas

Sunsari. Following a police shooting that resulted in one death in Kaptanganj, Devanganj Rural Municipality-3, Sunsari, the Sunsari District Administration Office has issued an indefinite curfew order in five areas of the district.

Om Prakash Mehta, 24, of Kaptanganj, Devanganj Rural Municipality-3, died after being shot by police during a clash between two groups. Sixteen people, including protesters and police, were injured in the incident.

Chief District Officer Basudev Ghimire issued the order, effective from 7 AM on Monday until further notice. The order, issued at 12:30 AM, completely prohibits movement and any form of gathering, procession, demonstration, assembly, meeting, or blockade within the specified boundaries.

The administration has taken this step in accordance with Section 6 (A) of the Local Administration Act, 2028. The administration has also warned of strict action against those who take the law into their own hands. The order states, 'Anyone violating this order will be subject to a fine of up to one thousand rupees and imprisonment for up to one month.'

The administration has imposed a curfew within the boundaries of five areas in the district. Accordingly, Area 'A' includes the area from Nunia Tole to the east, West Khuniya Dhar to the west, Harinagara Rural Municipality Office to the north, and Basantpur Mode to the south, within the Harinagara Bazaar area. Similarly, Area 'B', within the Bhutaha Bazaar area, has a curfew in effect from Moriya Dhar River to the east, Idgah Field to the west, Sunsari River to the north, and Harinagara Rural Municipality Office to the south.

Area 'C', i.e., the Kasnaganaj Bazaar area, will have the order in effect from Yadav Tole to the east, Paichau Siml Ma Vi to the west, Krishna Ma Vi to the north, and the Nepal-India border area to the south. Likewise, Area 'D', within the Ghuski Bazaar area, has boundaries set from Kasmiya Madrasa to the east, Ghuski Police Post to the west, Isha Hardware to the north, and Hilal Public School to the south.

Area 'E', i.e., Devanganj Bazaar area, has a curfew order implemented within the boundaries of Musahar Tole on the road to Biratnagar to the east, Moriya River to the west, Chiura Mill to the north, and the Rural Municipality Office to the south, the administration stated.
