Former Deputy Secretary-General Pradip Gyawali Warns of Geopolitical Risks from Constitutional Amendments

Kathmandu. Former Deputy Secretary-General of CPN-UML, Pradip Gyawali, has stated that the actions being taken by the ruling party in the name of constitutional amendment carry the risk of pushing the country into a geopolitical whirlpool.  

Speaking at a discussion program on 'The Role of Leftist Parties in the Current Political Situation' organized by Pushpalal Friendship Center on the occasion of the 48th Pushpalal Smriti Diwas on Friday, Gyawali said this.  

'What is happening today in the name of constitutional amendment, fundamental things have been cut with scissors. This can be understood as having pushed the country into a very difficult situation,' Gyawali said, 'The achievements must be understood as being in jeopardy.'

He also stated that the balance of power is unfavorable, and even if the three parties that played a key role in constitution-making unite, they do not have the capacity to stop the ruling party in the House of Representatives.  

'There is the National Assembly, but if the people are not vigilant, the regressive amendment cannot be stopped,' he said. 'The visits of Westerners pushing the country into a geopolitical whirlpool, Free Tibet activities, and events like the Prime Minister standing in parliament and saying that Nepal has encroached upon India's land can be understood as attempts to push the country into geopolitical risk,' he said, 'Citizens' rights are continuously being taken away.'

Former minister Gyawali stated that communists can only resist by uniting on the common issues of the country and extending a hand of cooperation.

Since the crisis is not just of the communist movement but of the entire country, Gyawali expressed the view that efforts should be made to involve the Nepali Congress as well for cooperation as much as possible.
