Actor Rajesh Hamal Stresses Need for Citizen-Traffic Police Coordination for Effective Traffic Management

Kathmandu. Actor Rajesh Hamal has emphasized the need for strong coordination between citizen responsibility and traffic police duty to make traffic management effective.  

Speaking at a program organized on the occasion of the 14th anniversary of Metro Traffic FM on Friday, he said that road management is not only the responsibility of the police but also a shared responsibility of all citizens.

Hamal expressed concern over the excessive increase in the number of vehicles over time, while physical infrastructure has not developed in proportion. He stated that road management would be more organized if infrastructure construction and modern technology were used in a timely manner.

Speaking at the program, Hamal said, 'The volume of vehicles has increased excessively with time. However, due to the lack of proportional development of roads and other infrastructure, management has become challenging.'

Discussing the excessive haste and 'indisciplined' tendencies seen on the roads, he said that a change in the psychology of drivers and pedestrians is necessary. He argued that understanding the reality that everyone rushing at once makes the road more chaotic and increases traffic jams, a culture of 'you first' instead of 'me first' is necessary.

Clarifying the roles of citizens and the police, Hamal said, 'I want to praise the traffic police for performing their duties efficiently. However, the police's efforts alone are not enough to make traffic management successful; every citizen must also fulfill their duties and responsibilities.'

Mentioning that road expansion alone is not the solution to the problem, Hamal expressed the view that efficient management should be prioritized. Citing examples from some developed countries where roads are narrower than in Nepal but traffic movement is smooth due to effective management, he suggested improving management in Kathmandu.

Hamal further added regarding road width and management, 'Expanding the road is not the only solution for road management. In many countries around the world, vehicles are operated in an organized manner on roads narrower than in Nepal. The main reason for this is effective management.'

Stating that obeying traffic rules is in everyone's interest, he described it as a 'win-win situation'. Hamal said that obeying the rules saves time for both citizens and the police and ensures safety. He urged all stakeholders to be responsible and disciplined, stating that traffic management in Kathmandu as well as across the country can be given the right direction only if every level and segment of society works together.
