Kathmandu Metropolitan City Directs Technical Report on Maitighar Mandala Flooding

Kathmandu. Kathmandu Metropolitan City has taken seriously the flooding in the Maitighar Mandala area and has directed to submit a report identifying the technical reasons.

In the recent rains, the Maitighar area has been getting submerged. Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol, after conducting an on-site inspection of the flooded area, has directed the officials from the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Corporation, Division Road Office Kathmandu, and the relevant departments of the Metropolitan City to submit a report including the technical reasons for the incident.

Officials from the Valley Traffic Police Office, Kathmandu Metropolitan City's Disaster Management Department, Public Works Department, Urban Planning Commission, and Metropolitan Police Force participated in the on-site inspection on Tuesday evening.

During the on-site inspection, Subodh Devkota, chief of the Division Road Office Kathmandu, provided preliminary information that there is a 90 cm diameter drain in the Maitighar area, but since the outlet has only a 60 cm drain, the water drainage is affected. He stated that this is one of the reasons for the flooding, but not the only one.

Officials have pointed out the need to remove obstructions in the drainage system that have been created during the construction of buildings and other structures around Maitighar Mandala.

After the inspection, Acting Mayor Dangol also stated that all obstructions in the drainage system of the Maitighar Mandala area will be removed and it will be made flood-free by coordinating with the local administration and bodies related to infrastructure construction and service delivery.
