BP Koirala Memorial Day Observed Across Nepal

Kathmandu. The memorial day of Nepal's first elected Prime Minister and founding leader of Nepali Congress, Bishweshwor Prasad Koirala, is being observed across the country today with various programs. Koirala, known as the proponent of democratic socialism in Nepali politics, passed away on Shrawan 6, 2039 BS. 

Remembering Koirala's incomparable contribution to Nepal's political change and the enrichment of Nepali literature, Nepali Congress and its sister organizations have organized memorial assemblies, विचार गोष्ठी (thought seminars), and other creative programs across the country today. 

Koirala became Nepal's first elected Prime Minister after the Nepali Congress secured a two-thirds majority in the general election of 2015 BS. During his tenure, he implemented the abolition of Birta and the revolutionary land reform program called 'Jamin Jotneko' (for the one who tills the land). 

Along with politics, Koirala also holds a distinct place in Nepali literature. His famous novels include 'Doshi Chashma' (story collection), 'Teen Ghumti', 'Narendra Dai', 'Sumnima', 'Modiain', and 'Hitler ra Yahudi'. In Nepali literature, he is considered the pioneer of the 'psychological realist' genre. 'BP Memorial Day' is observed in memory of Koirala, who struggled for a long time for the establishment of democracy in Nepal. His policy of reconciliation and ideological perspective are considered equally relevant in today's politics.
