Political Equation Changes Across Provinces, Gandaki Government Unaffected

Pokhara. The wave of political equation changes that entered from Sudurpaschim has reached the whole country. Parties are engaged in forming new equations in all seven provinces.

According to the latest details, a new government equation is likely to be formed between the CPN (UML) and the Communist Party of Nepal. Although the alliance of these two parties will have an impact on other provinces, it will not affect the Gandaki government.

In the Gandaki Provincial Assembly, the government cannot be formed with the 22 seats of the UML and 6 seats of the Communist Party of Nepal excluding the Speaker. To form a government of UML-CPN, at least the Rastriya Prajatantra Party must support it. In the Gandaki Provincial Assembly, where one seat is vacant, at least 30 seats are required to form a government. Since the election of Member of Parliament Rajiv Gurung alias Deepak Manange from Manang was convicted in a murder case and went to jail, that place is vacant.

With 59 members, 30 seats are mandatory for a majority. The Nepali Congress, the largest party, has 27 seats. The Gandaki government was formed by the alliance between the Congress and the UML. This government is also supported by 2 MPs from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and one MP from the Nepal Socialist Party (currently Loktantrik Samajwadi Party). Although former minister Fanindra Devkota resigned from his post during the Janji movement on August 23 and 24 after the government was formed, he has not withdrawn his support to the government.

Thus, the government led by Congress leader Surendraraj Pandey seems to be continuing. MP Devkota says he will stand in favor of the government's stability. 'I have not withdrawn the support given to this government. This does not mean that the support is for all time. If political decency is not shown, it can be withdrawn,' he said, 'but the structural framework of the province should not be affected by the decision I make.'

He says he will not lean towards any side for the post. The other party supporting the government, RPP, is also not in a mood to withdraw its support so far.

However, party leader Pancharam Gurung said that discussions within the party are still pending. 'We have not withdrawn the support given to the government. This government is also capable of working,' he said, 'It is not good to bring disputes from elsewhere into Gandaki.'

In the UML parliamentary party meeting, MPs suggested that the current alliance should be maintained. They are also of the opinion that the disputes in other provinces should not affect Gandaki. However, there is a compulsion to accept the decision of the center, said Chief Whip Devka Pahari.

'This problem did not arise because of Gandaki. Our belief is that it should not be stirred up here,' she said, 'Again, it is not possible to go without implementing the decision and directive made by the center.'

Congress also wants to remain in the current alliance. Chief Minister Surendraraj Pandey said that they are in a wait-and-see situation. 'We are in a wait and see situation. Let's see what the decision is, then we will discuss,' he said.

CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has returned from Sri Lanka. As he is currently engaged in internal discussions, no party has been able to make a decision. In Gandaki, the CPN (Maoist Centre) wants the Chief Minister's post. Party leader Haribahadur Chauhan claims that it is now his turn to become the Chief Minister.
