Man Critically Injured After Attempted Self-Immolation, Undergoing Treatment

Kathmandu. Treatment is ongoing at Kirtipur Burn Hospital for 35-year-old Vivek Mandal of Godaita Municipality in Sarlahi, who attempted self-immolation. 

According to the hospital, Mandal is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU. He has been on a ventilator since Friday evening. 

Relative Akhlesh Mandal said that the doctors informed him that 85 percent of Vivek's body was burnt. Mandal told Ratopati, quoting the doctors, 'They said they would operate on the wound. However, the operation could not be done due to low blood pressure. A large part of the body is burnt.'

According to relatives, Vivek, who has an MSc in Biology, had been under mental stress for the past year.

Vivek used to teach at a school in Ramnagar. The school administration appointed another person in Vivek's place. For that reason, he had been unemployed for the past year. 

Vivek's sister-in-law Shanti Devi Mandal said, 'He had been staying at home for a year. He had started taking mental stress. Suddenly, around 12 PM on Friday, he attempted self-immolation at Sisautiya Bazar Chowk.'

Vivek was brought to Kathmandu by helicopter on Friday. Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa and Member of Parliament from Sarlahi Constituency No. 5 Amaresh Kumar Singh had reached the hospital to understand Vivek's condition.
