Opposition Leader Angdembe Stresses Government Accountability and Support for Results

Kathmandu. Chief opposition party Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe has stated that the government is being continuously monitored to work according to public expectations. He clarified that the role of the opposition is not to oppose for the sake of opposition, but to make the government accountable and to alert it to fulfill the commitments made to the public.

Speaking at the Municipal Assembly of Ilam Municipality on Monday, leader Angdembe also claimed that the issues raised by the opposition in the parliament are the voices of the public. He stated that the state has not shown the expected sensitivity while farmers are suffering from various problems.

'The way farmers are being harassed in the country is pushing our economy to a critical juncture. We are still feeling that the nation is not being sensitive towards this,' Angdembe said.

He said that even though the government was formed by a large mandate, it is the responsibility of the opposition to make it accountable to the public.

'The voice of the opposition in the parliament is your voice. The role of the opposition is to alert the government to be more rigorous in its commitments to the public, and we are continuously doing that work,' he said.

Angdembe also stated that there is growing public dissatisfaction with the government across the country. He said that many citizens are concluding that the change in votes and attraction towards new political forces have not yielded the expected results.

'It seems that changing parties was an exercise in changing votes, but the Nepali people are beginning to conclude that this alone does not solve the problem,' he said.

He admitted that in the past, citizens were attracted to new parties because political parties could not respect the trust of the people. 'It is because we could not respect the mandate given by the people that the public's anger and frustration have shifted towards new parties,' he said.

Angdembe also clarified that the Congress is not in favor of opposing the government just for the sake of opposition. He said that the views expressed by him in parliament and the message expressed by Congress President Gagan Thapa at the Rastriya Swatantra Party's general convention in Chitwan are the same.

'The current opposition has not come to oppose for the sake of opposition, but to support for the sake of results,' he said. 'The Nepali Congress is ready to support the government as a collaborator, not as an adversary, to achieve results.'

Angdembe emphasized that both the ruling and opposition parties must work to deliver results according to public expectations, stating that this is also the basis for the success of democracy.
