Flood and Landslide Damage in Yangwarak Rural Municipality, Panchthar

Panchthar. Continuous rainfall last night caused floods and landslides, resulting in significant damage in Yangwarak Rural Municipality of Panchthar. Houses, sheds, roads, suspension bridges, and hydropower projects have been damaged in Wards No. 1, 2, and 3 of Yangwarak Rural Municipality.

According to Baba Menyangbo, Vice-Chairperson of Yangwarak Rural Municipality, floods and landslides have so far washed away two houses in Ward No. 1 and three suspension bridges in Wards No. 1 and 2 combined. Vice-Chairperson Menyangbo informed that no human casualties have been reported yet and the rainfall has stopped. Floods and landslides have caused significant damage in the area around Chiya-Chyangthapu Bazaar in Yangwarak-1.

The Oyam-Chiwabhanjyang section of the Mid-Hilly Highway is completely obstructed due to continuous rainfall. Landslides have occurred at Rijal Bhir in Yangwarak-3, and the diversion at Dobhane in Ward No. 2 has been completely washed away.

According to Anish Kumar Karna, Chief of the District Police Office, Panchthar, efforts have begun to clear the Oyam-Chiwabhanjyang section of the Pushpalal (Mid-Hilly) Highway. The border police office, Chyangthapu, has started collecting details of the damage, and information has been received about two houses being washed away so far, informed Deputy Superintendent of Police Karna.

Similarly, the truss of the Limbuni road bridge under construction in the Tamor Corridor, at the border of Hilihang Rural Municipality of Panchthar and Atharai Triveni Rural Municipality of Taplejung, has been washed away by the flood, according to the police. Panchthar police stated that floods in the Hiewa, Kabei, and Tamor rivers have made the riparian areas risky.

Local resident Tej Bahadur Yongya informed that the flood and landslides that occurred last night have also caused significant damage to the arable land around Oyam Bazaar in Yangwarak-3.
