Father and son arrested for gold jewelry fraud in Kathmandu

Kathmandu. Police have arrested a father and son on charges of defrauding people under the pretext of making gold jewelry at a lower cost. The arrested individuals are 51-year-old Jiban Kumar Thakur and his 27-year-old son Nihal Thakur, originally from Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan City-6, Dhanusha, and currently residing in Teku.

They were arrested from Basundhara on Sunday, SP Manohar Bhatta of the Valley Crime Investigation Office told RatoPati. Preliminary police investigations conclude that the accused have defrauded victims of 12 million rupees.

They had been operating a gold and silver shop named Swarna Sansar in New Road for 15 years. SP Bhatta stated that they closed the shop eight months ago and went out of contact. Police investigation concludes that they used the social media platform TikTok to advertise the redesigning of old gold and silver jewelry at cheap prices, only to take the gold from others and disappear. It was found that they used to gain the victims' trust by providing them with checks.

The Crime Investigation Office has sent Jiban Kumar Thakur to the Lalitpur Police Range and Nihal to the Janasewa Police Circle for investigation into banking offense cases.

Records show that three banking offense cases and ten fraud-related complaints have been registered against Jiban at the Janasewa Police Circle.
