Supreme Court Seeks Response from CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet in Contempt Case

Kathmandu. The Supreme Court has ordered the issuance of a written response from CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet in a contempt of court case. A joint bench of Justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Mahesh Sharma Paudel ordered the issuance of the written response to Basnet in the contempt of court case.

Advocate Laban Neupane filed the contempt case against Basnet at the Supreme Court last Wednesday. The contempt of court case was filed alleging that Basnet made remarks targeting Supreme Court justices, focusing on the case concerning the dissolution of the House of Representatives pending in the court.

The writ petition mentions that during a program organized by Press Chautari Nepal on Magh 11, Basnet stated, 'The Chief Justice and other justices disappearing due to an illness they are not admitting to, the judicial process being terrorized, delayed due to fear or temptation, not delivering justice, succumbing to pressure, fearing impeachment tomorrow, or fearing national and international powers, the Chief Justice and other justices turning off their phones, avoiding [their duties].'

Furthermore, the writ petition mentions that Basnet publicly insulted the court by stating, 'We are under foreign attack, and it is realized that not only our Supreme Court, High Courts, and District Courts are burned, but our entire justice system is burned.'
