Only One Woman Elected Among 18 Female Candidates in Sudurpashchim Federal Elections

Dhangadhi. Only one woman has won among the 18 female candidates who contested the elections for the House of Representatives under the first-past-the-post system in Sudurpashchim Province. Eighteen women, including two independent candidates, competed in 16 constituencies across the nine districts of Sudurpashchim.

According to the election results, Komal Gyawali of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) was the only one elected, securing a victory by obtaining 17,826 votes from Kailali Constituency No. 1.

Similarly, Bina Magar, a candidate from the major party, the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), was defeated. Magar, who contested from Kanchanpur Constituency No. 1, received 11,110 votes, which was insufficient for victory.

Most of the other female candidates participating in the election represented smaller parties. The performance of some of the 18 participating women candidates was very weak; some failed to even cross 100 votes.

In the 2079 elections, Ranjita Shrestha, who is also the chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, was victorious from Kailali Constituency No. 1. At that time too, she was the only woman to contest and win the House of Representatives election.
