UN Secretary-General Condemns Israeli Occupation’s Demolition of Buildings at UNRWA Headquarters in Occupied Jerusalem
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the demolition of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) compound by the Israeli occupation authorities in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem.
In a statement, the Secretary-General urged the government of Israel to immediately cease the demolition of the UNRWA compound, and to return and restore the compound and other UNRWA premises to the United Nations without delay.
Guterres said that the Sheikh Jarrah compound remains United Nations property and is protected and immune from any form of interference, noting that he has repeatedly and unequivocally affirmed this, including in his letter to the Israeli Prime Minister dated Jan. 8 of this year.
Guterres described the continuation of escalating measures against UNRWA as wholly unacceptable and inconsistent with Israel’s clear obligations under international law, including under the Charter of the United Nations and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.
Israeli occupation forces had raided the UNRWA headquarters in Jerusalem on Tuesday and demolished parts of it.
