Government Prepares to Suspend Passports of Top Leaders

The government is preparing to suspend the passports of several top political leaders. This list includes KP Sharma Oli, the chairman of CPN-UML and former Prime Minister; Ramesh Lekhak, former Home Minister; Sher Bahadur Deuba, the president of Nepali Congress and former Prime Minister; and former Energy Minister Deepak Khadka, among other senior figures.

Reason for the Action Linked to Protest Suppression

A minister informed that this action is being taken because an investigation is required against the leaders who were involved in suppressing the Ganatantra (Republic) movement on a specific date. The demand from the protestors is for action to be taken against those who turned the movement into a scene of suppression. The minister stated that investigations could also cover other matters, and for this purpose, the government is preparing to suspend their passports.

Focus of the Immediate Investigation

Sources claim that the government plans to immediately investigate two main issues. The first is the suppression carried out by the government during the protests. The second is based on the large amount of cash that was reportedly found at the home of a leader. The passport suspension is seen as a step to facilitate this immediate investigation.
