Government Bans Unregistered Social Media in Nepal
The government of Nepal has placed a ban on social media platforms, including Facebook, that did not register with the authorities. The Ministry of Communication instructed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to block these platforms after they failed to register within a given deadline. This action has left many people wondering which apps and websites will still work in the country.
Which Social Media Platforms Are Still Working?
Following the government's order, some platforms had already completed their registration. These include TikTok, Viber, WeChat, NimBuzz, and Popo Live. These registered platforms are expected to continue operating without interruption for users in Nepal.
Additionally, two other platforms, Telegram and Global Diary, have submitted their applications for registration to the ministry. However, major platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube did not register by the deadline and are now subject to the ban.
The Reason Behind the Ban
The government had set a deadline of seven days for all social media companies to complete their mandatory registration. This deadline expired on Wednesday night. The ban is a direct result of these companies not meeting the government's registration requirement by that time.
