Opposition plans memorandum and special session over government's failure

Kathmandu, October 18 — The government has been accused of lacking seriousness regarding relief and rehabilitation for flood and landslide victims, prompting a decision to call a special parliamentary session if necessary.

During a joint meeting of opposition parties held at the Parliament building in New Baneshwor on Friday, it was resolved to submit a memorandum to the government and to convene a special session should there be no response.

Leader of the main opposition party, Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda, provided a briefing on the current political situation, the government's performance over the past three months, and the damages caused by natural disasters. Shakti Basnet, Deputy General Secretary of the Maoist Centre, stated that the meeting concluded the Oli government has been wholly unsuccessful over this period.

"During disasters such as floods and landslides, the government should have focused on search, rescue, and relief efforts, but that did not happen. It appears the government has prioritized personal and party interests over public concerns," Basnet explained. "In light of these issues, we have decided to draw the government's attention on behalf of the opposition. Should there be no response, the opposition parties have agreed to convene a special parliamentary session."

Similarly, Rajendra Lingden, chairman of the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, remarked that the opposition has concluded that the government's performance over the last three months has been entirely inadequate. He noted the decision to call a special session if the government does not address concerns regarding relief, rehabilitation, livelihoods, good governance, and social justice for flood and landslide victims.

"The Oli government has been wholly unsuccessful over the last three months. Despite prior warnings, the government failed to focus on risk mitigation. It has shown indifference towards relief and rehabilitation efforts for flood and landslide victims. The opposition has resolved to submit a memorandum to the government on this matter, and if there is still no seriousness shown, we will call a special parliamentary session," Lingden stated.

The meeting was attended by senior leaders from the Maoist Centre, Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Unified Socialist Party, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, and Aam Janata Party.
