Police clash with protesters over corruption case statute of limitation (Photos)
Kathmandu, August 17 - A demonstration in Kathmandu on Saturday called for the abolition of the 5-year statute of limitations on corruption cases. The protest in New Baneshwor escalated into a scuffle between the protestors and police after demonstrators attempted to breach a restricted area.
The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee is currently reviewing a bill to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059. The ruling parties are at odds over the bill's provision, which requires prosecution within five years of discovering the corruption.
The bill also includes a provision for pursuing cases against public officials even after retirement, within five years of their departure, if corruption is discovered. This aspect of the bill has also sparked division among the parties.
