Oli rectifies: Refers to Maoist insurgency as 'armed conflict'

Kathmandu, August 14: KP Sharma Oli, Chairman of CPN-UML and Prime Minister, has withdrawn his remarks referring to the Maoist insurgency as a 'violent conflict.'

In a Parliament meeting on Wednesday, Maoist Center Chairman Prachanda urged Oli to recall the Constituent Assembly's explanatory note regarding the conflict. Prachanda criticized the tendency to label the Maoist People's War as a 'violent conflict,' suggesting that such language misrepresents the historical context and intentions of the Maoist movement.

On August 8, Oli had described the Maoist People's War as a 'violent conflict' in a Facebook post, stating that after 18 years of conflict and a comprehensive peace agreement, the transitional justice bill has been agreed upon by the main parties. He emphasized that, upon the bill's passage, corresponding commissions would be established to address the issues of the past. This characterization drew criticism from Maoist supporters.

Prachanda expressed dissatisfaction and suspicion regarding Oli’s inconsistent language during discussions on the TRC Bill. On the same day, Oli updated his Facebook status to use the term 'armed conflict' instead.

Following the passing of the TRC bill on Wednesday, Oli remarked that the bill's near-unanimous approval marks a significant step toward concluding the peace process.

He stated that the Commission on Enforced Disappearances and Truth and Reconciliation Commission will address the issues related to the conflict, acknowledging the suffering and losses experienced by society. Oli also praised the political parties and House members for their role in advancing the peace process.
