Maoists' Hamletian dilemma: To hold or not to hold special convention?
Kathmandu, August 11: At the CPN-Maoist Center's standing committee meeting, party leaders engaged in an open debate about party policy and leadership. The meeting, which has been taking place at the party’s central office in Parisdanda since Friday, focused on various issues including leadership options, idea synthesis, and party development.
During the meeting on Saturday, Deputy General Secretary Janardhan Sharma presented a written proposal addressing internal party issues, leadership choices, and party development. Another Deputy General Secretary, Barshman Pun, also participated in the debate on policy and leadership.
Spokesman Agni Prasad Sapkota reported that most leaders who spoke on Sunday engaged in a theoretical discussion about policy and leadership. There was a consensus on the need for new methods and systems within the party.
The discussion also focused on the concept of scientific leadership. According to Sapkota, the party Chair Prachanda had stated on the first day that preparations for party overhaul should be made ideologically, organizationally, and legally. “After considering all opinions, Prachanda will address the questions raised during the meeting,” he added.
Sapkota mentioned that there is ongoing discussion about whether to hold a special general convention or a regular general convention. Some members argued that a special convention might be unnecessary given the upcoming regular convention, while others believed it was essential to address organizational issues. This matter will now be decided by the Central Committee.
