Martyrs’ Week begins

Kathmandu, The Martyrs’ Week, during which the nation pays rich tributes to the known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their life for the cause of the country and the people and their freedom, has begun today.
Conducted every year in commemoration of martyrs who sacrificed their life for the nation and the people, the Week began this year by garlanding a photo of martyr Shukraraj Shastri, one of the four leading martyrs including others Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand and Ganga Lal Shrestha, at Pachali in Teku where he attained martyrdom.
The Week is organised by the Main Celebration Committee under the coordination of Bidya Sundar Shakya, mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
The four martyrs were sentenced to death for their involvement in overthrowing then Rana regime. Shastri was executed by hanging in a tree at Pachali on January 23, 1941.
Likewise, as per the tradition to honour the martyrs, a tribute would be paid on January 27 to Mathema at Shiphal, where he attained martyrdom, and to Shrestha and Chand on January 29 at Shovabhagawati where they achieved martyrdom. Likewise, a condolence meeting will be organised at Martyr Monument at Lainchaur on January 30.
