Women's representation stressed on SC, high courts' appointments

Kathmandu, The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) women committee has sought priority to women's representation on the appointments of Supreme Court's judges and chief judges for the high courts.
A delegation led by committee president and senior advocate Usha Malla Sunday called on Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli to submit a memorandum to this effect. The memorandum insisted on the need for paying attention to the enforcement of principles of proportional representation and inclusion guaranteed by the constitution while making appointments on such posts.
The group has expressed serious concern over the January 4 decision of the Judicial Council regarding the recommendations of chiefs of high courts. The decision was not in line the principle of inclusions ensured by the constitution as there was no single woman candidate in four names recommended for the posts, the delegation said.
Receiving the memo, CJ said he was sensitive towards the issue raised by the delegation, pledging to include women faces in the appointment of judges at the SC and high courts in the future.
