NA session postponed due to NC’s obstruction

Kathmandu– A session of the National Assembly, the Upper House in the bicameral Federal Parliament of Nepal, scheduled for today was adjourned following the obstructions from the main opposition Nepali Congress.

The main opposition did not allow the session to operate, expressing its concerns over no-decision by the government regarding the operations of two hospitals established in commemoration of party prominent leaders and former presidents (the late) Girija Prasad Koirala and Sushil Koirala. The NC wants the government to decide that under which body, the hospitals will be operated.

Earlier too, the NC obstructed two meetings on January 16 and 21, for the same reason. It may be noted that the recent Cabinet meeting decided to operate nine hospitals in several parts of the country under the federal government. It is said that the GP Koirala National Centre for Respiratory Diseases (Tanahu) and Sushil Koirala Prakhar Cancer Hospital (Banke) are not the in list of nine hospitals.

With the NA Chair informing the NA members about the commencement of the session, NA lawmakers stood from their respective seats as a symbol of protest. Then NA chair Ganesh Timilsina awarded time to Badri Pandey to put his views before the session, who expressed his concerns over the lack of government decision regarding the operations of two hospitals named after two dedicated democratic fighters.

As he said, the NC wished to see no undervaluation of contributions of the party’s two acclaimed figures to the establishment of republic in the country, materialization of the historic peace process and the promulgation of the constitution. The health facilities should exist there for the health services of people, he asserted.

He, however, pledged constructive support to the government as the ongoing session remained as a bill session. Following the protesting move of the main opposition party, the NA chair announced the postponement of the session by 15 minutes.

In today’s session, NA secretary Rejendra Phuyal was scheduled to table the National Medical Education Bill-2075 BS along with the message received from the House of Representatives.
