Food Department Halts Seven Up Production Over Contamination Concerns

Kathmandu. The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has stopped the production and distribution of 'Seven Up' by Varun Beverages (Nepal) Pvt. Ltd.

Following a complaint that external substances were found in the bottle, a joint team led by the department conducted an emergency inspection at the industry located in Pepsi Cola, Kathmandu, and halted production.

The department raided the industry on July 21, 2026, under the Rapid Response Modality. 'External substances were found in Seven Up with production date 16-04-2026 and batch number B006,' the complaint filed with the department stated. Addressing the same complaint, the department reached the industry and conducted an on-site inspection.

During the inspection, the team found two control sample bottles of the same batch in the industry. It was found that the industry produces Seven Up in 250 ml glass bottles.

Upon inspecting the industry's production process, the team found that the bottle washing system consists of seven stages. 'There is a four-stage light checking system before filling the bottles,' the inspection report states, 'After filling, there is a metal detector and finally a light inspection system.' However, the department clarified that no external substances were found in other bottles in the industry's processing and storage rooms.

Following the inspection, the department collected samples of the suspicious batch number B006. All production of Seven Up has been halted until further notice. 'The sale and distribution of Seven Up of that batch have also been stopped,' the department said, 'We have instructed the industry to provide written information about this to the department.'

This action has been taken in accordance with the Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081, informed Senior Food Research Officer Dr. Bala Kumari Sharma. A joint team from the Division Office of Food Technology and Quality Control Kathmandu, the District Administration Office, the Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection, and the Police Division Kadhaghari was deployed for the inspection.
